Dear Ruth, Written from a Crossroads Moment

by Megan McDermott

I envy your decisiveness,
your extremity of language
and love.

Life gives me “either.”

Life gives me “or.”

And I must become a scale,

arms wavering with the weight
of two paths.

You decide from conviction
while I follow the road that falls first.

“Where you die, I will die…May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!” – Ruth 1:17 (NRSV)
